Shepherd’s Purse – Issue 112

This plant has a long history of use to stanch bleeding, including during World War I.

Shepherd’s Purse seems to be a funny name for a plant and was so named because of her heart shaped seed pods, known as siliques, which must have reminded early people of the purses that the shepherds carried. The botanical name Capsella bursa-pastoris was an old name that historical writers gave to Shepherd’s Purse and was retained as the botanical name. In Latin, bursa is “bag” while pastoris is “pertaining to a shepherd,” hence the common name Shepherd’s Purse. This tenacious little annual offers more than just pretty little heart shaped seed pods.

In this issue, you’ll learn all about Shepherd’s Purse through the stories, songs, games, crafts, recipes and botany.
