American Ginseng root has been in use for hundreds of years, if not longer, by first Native Americans and then Asia and Europe, who revered American Ginseng’s medicine to be similar to Asian Ginseng.
This plant has a history of being an adaptogen, strengthening the body, increasing longevity, improving memory function and building the immune system. Today it is still so widely used, with a market that offers insanely high market value prices, encouraging diggers to poach and find the root by any means necessary.
This plant is an extremely slow growing perennial, often living for 50-60 years (if not dug up) spreading slowly by seed. Unlike other natives such as Black Cohosh, Solomon’s Seal and Blue Cohosh, this plant’s roots cannot be divided and replanted to produce more plants and diggers are required by law to produce the entire root so the neck cannot be replanted to continue its growth.
This issue shares medicinal information about American Ginseng, how to successfully grow your own and how to use this medicine sparingly for good health.
