About Course

The Native Medicinal Plants Awareness Journey is 14 issues of plants that are at risk for extinction and being protected by the United Plant Savers. Through their conservation efforts and the efforts of countless other individuals who are working to cultivate and protect these species, we hope to not only rescue these plants from extinction but also help them to thrive in their natural environments.

What is the project all about?

About the project, Native Medicinal Plant Awareness for Children:

This is a multi-faceted project which will include 12 issues of Herbal Roots zine, a 2019 wall calendar and an at risk native medicinal herbals coloring book, all of which is being created over the course of the next year.

I am devoting a year of Herbal Roots zine to focusing on native medicinal species that are on the United Plant Savers’ “at risk” list. In addition to the existing sections of each issue, I will be adding in sections on the conservation and cultivation of those plants and how to help existing wild spaces to thrive.

This project will focus on teaching kids about the importance of conservation and the cultivation of 14 of our most endangered species of native medicinals through stories, songs, poems, games, puzzles, etc. The outcome of this project will be 14 individual issues, each issue devoted to a particular endangered or “at risk” native medicinal herb.

In the past I have been hesitant to write about plants that are endangered and at risk due to the over harvesting of such plants. I feel the time has come to address this concern directly, by teaching our next generation of herbalists the proper course of action when using native medicinals for medicine through responsible cultivation and stewardship.
